Sutter Hybrid OR
The scope of the project consisted of converting the existing 3rd floor shell space and medical equipment storage room into a Hybrid Operating Room with imaging and support equipment.
Nestled within a suite of existing operating rooms and pathology lab with extensive above ceiling mechanical, medical gas and electrical systems, critical phasing was required to minimize building service shutdown and avoid disruptions to occupied areas. Integrated Project Delivery method was the approach chosen by the Owner to align project objectives, foster joint management between the team and to insure efficient coordination and delivery of the project.
The team relied on Autodesk Revit, AutoCAD Fabrication CADmep, Bluebeam Revu, and Autodesk BIM 360 for modeling, data management, and collaboration to virtually construct the Hybrid OR and support systems with a high degree of reliability. To meet the Owner’s requirements and the challenge of complicated above ceiling design and coordination of the building services, the team chose a relatively new approach to OR design. The centerpiece for the design of the OR was the CLEANSUITE system, an all-inclusive modular ceiling diffuser system designed to integrate electrical, lighting, plumbing, med-gas,boom mounts, HVAC, filtration, and optional accessories. The system was chosen to centralize design and installation of building services, reduce on-site coordination of trades during installation, and reduce installation time. To complement the IPD process, an OSHPD Incremental Phased Plan Review was approved.
The phased plan review lent itself well to the highly collaborative IPD method in that the team was able to engage OSHPD early in the design to communicate the detailed concept sand criteria for the design of the Hybrid OR. This process was critical in communicating the unique requirements of the CLEANSUITE system design to OSHPD. OSHPD Incremental Phased Plan Review was selected to complement the IPD process.
