Desert Sage Youth Wellness Center
Desert Sage Youth Wellness Center is a regional youth treatment center providing culturally appropriate substance use disorder services to approximately 100 tribal youth ages 12–17 annually.
The center contains 16 double rooms (to house 32 residents) split evenly between boys and girls. There is a close observation unit of six bedrooms as well as five family suites(three one-bedroom and two two-bedroom). In addition, the project includes a gymnasium,weight room, classrooms, vocational activity, a full kitchen and dining area, administrative spaces, and a cultural building. Several mechanical systems were analyzed on a life-cycle basis in the process of developing a highly efficient approach to meet the project’s sustainability goals. In addition, plumbing utilities were closely analyzed to minimize demands and energy use given the remote project location.
Low-flow fixtures and a solar hot water heating system were incorporated.Capital provided LEED enhanced commissioning level of services on HVAC and controls,Fuel Gas, Domestic Water, Sanitary Drainage, Fire protection, Electrical Distribution, Energy Management, Advanced metering, Photovoltaic, Building Grounding and Lightning protection, Building Security and Public address systems.This project required multiple complex, leading-edge and highly technological systems interfacing and communicating with each other. This type of approach required a high level of participation and coordination among team members. The remote location also required focused efforts to limit the energy and utility demands to minimize infrastructure requirements.
