MOSAC – Museum Of Science And Curiosity

Powerhouse Science Center

In the next few years, the Discovery Museum Science and Space Center will significantly expand and transform to become the Powerhouse Science Center.

This new campus will be eight times the current Center’s size and fully embrace its mission as “a dynamic regional hub that engages and inspires people of all ages to explore the wonders, possibilities, and responsibilities of science.” The new 2-story, 32,000 SF Powerhouse will serve as the premier regional leader in science education and exploration housing the Earth and Space Science Center and Learning Center.

Capital was contracted to provide sustainable mechanical, plumbing and fire suppression engineering services with the objective of obtaining LEED Platinum certification, the owner’s highest accolade. The HVAC systems efficiency target is 30-40% better than current Title 24 utilizing a hydronic, chilled and hot water plant, radiant slabs and overhead chilled beams with CO2 controls and DDC automation for optimizing operations. The energy management system will integrate lighting controls, electrical demand metering, solar hot water systems and solar photovoltaic systems connected to a public “dashboard” delivering educational opportunities presented by the facility monitoring.
