Energy Modeling

Energy modeling for sustainable design

Energy modeling helps achieve sustainable design goals with a high degree of predictability on cost and efficiencies.

The best time to employ energy modeling is in the design phase of the project as it is often one of the key drivers of the building design. With owners setting higher efficiency and sustainability goals for their projects, energy modeling and life cycle cost analysis has become a critical aspect of what we do as engineers.

Energy Savings are the foundation of LEED and other Green Programs. Capital has successfully completed over 101 LEED projects.

Energy Modeling is the fundamental activity to document above CA Energy Code performance and achieve Utility Incentive payments thru Savings By Design and similar programs. On a recent High Education Project of 78,000 square feet, Capital’s Energy Modeling secured an Owner’s Incentive of $76,000, and a Design Team Incentive of $25,000.

Optimize your building. Get commissioning and energy modeling under one roof.

Most commissioning entities lack energy analysis expertise strength to have energy and commissioning under one roof. For project optimization, we offer commissioning, energy modeling and life cycle cost analysis under one roof. Capital has a strong engineering legacy and is equipped to give technical insights for energy modeling and recommend improvements.

The CSU Fresno Student Union project required that the final building include a Photovoltaic (PV) array which generated at least 25% of the building’s power.

Capital performed energy modeling at all design stages of the project to estimate building energy use and necessary PV array size. When project roof area was limiting PV array size, Capital was able to identify and model energy reduction strategies. These strategies restrained the size and cost of the required PV array and kept the project budget, and required array area, in check.

Capital’s Energy Model, and the complete team’s Building Design achieved an anticipated Savings By Design Incentive of over $1 million dollars at LAX’s new Midfield Concourse (MSC).

The Capital Edge

  • By integrating MEP design and energy modeling we can identify and implement actionable energy savings measures.
  • Capital includes Construction Drawing review by the Energy Modeling department in our quality control process. This ensures the Energy Conservation Measures identified are included in the final design documents.

Capital ensures full realization of your architectural vision.

Our “Performance Approach” for CA Energy Code compliance on your project has the flexibility for more architecturalexpression, and lower construction costs, compared to other methods.

Exceeding industry benchmarks

We use industry-standard energy simulation tools including EnergyPro, eQUEST and EnergyPlus, and TRACE 700. We have an extensive portfolio of projects that meets the California Building Energy Efficiency Standards and those whose performance is measured against ASHRAE 90.1.
